Telegram MCP Server: Give AI Agents the Full Telegram Bot API, Safely
What a Telegram MCP server is, why wrapping the Telegram Bot API for AI agents is harder than it looks, and how Metricgram exposes 70+ Bot API methods as secure, group-scoped MCP tools.

Open directoryWhy AI Agents Need A Telegram Wrapper
AI agents are getting good at operating real tools. They can read a dashboard, decide what matters and take the next step. But to act inside Telegram they need a bridge: something that turns a sentence like "pin the AMA announcement and open a questions topic" into the right Telegram API calls.
That bridge is a Telegram MCP server.
The Model Context Protocol (MCP) is an open standard that lets AI clients such as Claude, ChatGPT, Cursor and Codex discover tools and call them. A Telegram MCP server exposes Telegram actions as those tools, with clear descriptions and input schemas the model can follow.
Metricgram now runs one for you, backed by the bot that already manages your groups.
What "Wrapping The Telegram Bot API" Really Involves
On paper, wrapping the Bot API for an agent sounds easy. In practice you need to:
- Host a bot, keep its token secret and keep it running.
- Receive updates through webhooks or polling.
- Write a tool definition for every endpoint you want the agent to use.
- Stop the agent from posting into chats it should never touch.
- Handle rate limits, migrated supergroups and Telegram error messages.
- Make retries safe, so one flaky network call does not post the same message twice.
- Log what the agent did, in case you need to explain it later.
Most teams stop after "send a message" because everything else is a lot of plumbing. The result is an agent that can talk but cannot really manage a community.

Metricgram already sits inside your Telegram groups as an admin bot (or as your own custom bot). The MCP server simply lets your AI client use that bot through a hosted endpoint:
- Connect your groups to Metricgram and give the bot admin rights.
-
Add the endpoint
https://metricgram.com/api/v1/mcpto your AI client, for example as a custom connector in Claude. - Sign in and approve access with OAuth. That is it: no servers, webhooks or tokens to manage. Clients without OAuth can use an API key instead, with the configuration below.
{
"mcpServers": {
"metricgram": {
"url": "https://metricgram.com/api/v1/mcp",
"headers": { "Authorization": "Bearer YOUR_API_KEY" }
}
}
}
Claude Desktop users can bridge the same endpoint with mcp-remote. The exact snippets for each client are in the MCP page of your Manager.
70+ Bot API Methods, Two Ways To Call Them
The server exposes the Telegram Bot API in two layers.
Typed Tools For Everyday Work
Common jobs have dedicated tools with descriptive parameters, which makes them easy for models to use correctly:
-
send_telegram_messagewith topics, replies and URL buttons -
send_telegram_mediafor photos, videos, GIFs, documents, audio and stickers -
send_telegram_pollfor polls and quizzes -
edit_telegram_message,delete_telegram_messages,react_to_telegram_message -
pin_telegram_messageandforward_telegram_message -
manage_forum_topicto create, rename, close, reopen or delete topics -
get_telegram_chatandget_telegram_chat_memberfor live chat data -
handle_telegram_join_request,create_telegram_invite_linkandupdate_telegram_chat_settings
A Full Bot API Gateway
Everything else goes through telegram_bot_api. The agent passes an official Bot API method name and its parameters, for example setChatPermissions, banChatSenderChat, editMessageMedia, hideGeneralForumTopic or revokeChatInviteLink. The companion tool telegram_api_methods lists every method the current key can use, so the agent always knows what is available.
Security: Why The Agent Never Picks A chat_id
The most important design decision is what the agent cannot do.
-
The chat is locked. The agent passes a Metricgram
group_id. The server derives the Telegramchat_idfrom a group you own and rejects any other chat. - Forwards and quotes are checked. A message can only be forwarded, copied or quoted from your own groups.
- Bot-wide actions are excluded. Webhooks, payments, bot profile changes and leaving a group are not exposed.
- Buttons are safe. Inline buttons can open URLs or copy text, but cannot trigger callbacks into the bot.
-
Scopes match trust.
telegram:read,telegram:write,telegram:moderateandtelegram:adminare separate, and you can keep several keys with different powers. -
Retries are idempotent. Write tools accept an
idempotency_key, so a retried call returns the first result instead of acting twice. - Every call is logged with the tool and Bot API method that was used.
The agent acts as the bot through the official Bot API, never as your personal Telegram account.
Context That A Raw Bot Does Not Have
A plain Bot API wrapper can act, but it cannot see much. The Metricgram MCP server also exposes community intelligence:
- Analytics overview and activity time series
- Active members, member history and captured messages
- Gamification rankings and rewards
- AI summaries of what happened in the group
- Stripe subscriber health and renewals at risk
That means an agent can answer "who stopped participating this month?" and then send them a thoughtful message, all in one conversation.
Example Workflows
Weekly announcement. "Post the weekly AMA announcement in Crypto Talk, pin it without notifying everyone, open an AMA questions topic and create an invite link that expires on Friday."
Moderation sweep. "Check the last 200 messages for spam links, delete them and restrict the senders for 24 hours."
Community report. "Compare activity this week with last week, list the five most active members and post a short thank-you message in the General topic."
Join request triage. "Approve the pending join requests from users who are active subscribers and decline the rest."
Who It Is For
- Community owners who want an assistant that handles routine admin work.
- Agencies that manage many client groups and want one agent across all of them.
- Support and success teams that run customer communities on Telegram.
- Developers who want Telegram inside their agent stack without running bot infrastructure.
Getting Started
The MCP server is included in every Metricgram plan and in the 14-day free trial, so you can connect an agent before paying. Most clients connect with OAuth: paste the server URL, sign in and approve access. API keys remain available for clients without OAuth.
Read more on the Telegram MCP server page and the MCP feature overview, then create your first key from the Manager.
