How to Join a Telegram Group: Step-by-Step Guide

Joining a Telegram Group Is Easy — If You Know Where to Look

Telegram has over 900 million monthly active users, and groups are where most of the action happens. Whether it's a crypto trading community, a local neighborhood chat, or a professional networking space, joining a Telegram group takes about five seconds once you have the right information.

The problem is that Telegram offers multiple ways to join groups, and not all of them are obvious. Some groups are public and searchable. Others are private and require an invite. Some share links on websites, others use QR codes, and some you can only get into if someone manually adds you.

This guide covers every method so you never have to wonder how to get in.

1. Join via a Public Invite Link

This is the most common way people join Telegram groups. A public invite link looks like this:

t.me/groupname

or

https://t.me/groupname

You'll find these links on websites, social media profiles, forums, YouTube descriptions, and basically anywhere a group admin wants to attract new members.

How to join:

  1. Tap or click the link on any device.
  2. If Telegram is installed, it opens the app directly and shows you the group.
  3. Tap Join Group at the bottom of the screen.
  4. You're in.

If you're on desktop and Telegram isn't installed, the link opens in your browser and prompts you to open Telegram or use the web version at web.telegram.org.

One thing to note: Public invite links can be revoked by admins at any time. If you click a link and get an error saying the group can't be found, the link has either expired or been replaced.

2. Join via a Private Invite Link

Private groups don't show up in search results. The only way in is through an invite link that looks like this:

t.me/+AbCdEfGhIjK

Notice the + followed by a random string. That's what makes it a private invite link. These are generated by group admins and can be shared selectively.

How to join:

  1. Get the invite link from someone who has access (the admin, a current member, or a website).
  2. Tap or click the link.
  3. Telegram shows you basic info about the group — name, member count, and sometimes a description.
  4. Tap Join Group.

Important: Private invite links can have expiration dates or member limits. An admin might create a link that only works for 100 people or expires after 24 hours. If the link doesn't work, ask the person who shared it for a fresh one.

3. Join via Telegram's Built-in Search

Telegram has a search function that lets you find public groups directly inside the app. This works well for large, well-known communities but won't surface private groups.

How to search:

  1. Open Telegram.
  2. Tap the search icon (magnifying glass) at the top.
  3. Type a keyword related to the group you're looking for — for example, "Python developers" or "crypto trading."
  4. Scroll through the results. Groups are listed alongside channels, bots, and users.
  5. Tap on a group to preview it, then tap Join.

The reality: Telegram's built-in search is limited. It prioritizes groups with exact name matches and large member counts. Smaller or newer groups are nearly invisible. If you're looking for something specific, you'll have better luck with dedicated search tools — we cover the best options in our guide on how to search and find Telegram groups.

4. Join via QR Code

Some groups share QR codes instead of links — at events, on printed materials, in presentations, or on product packaging. The QR code simply encodes a t.me/ link, so scanning it is functionally the same as clicking a link.

How to join:

  1. Open your phone's camera or any QR scanner app.
  2. Point it at the QR code.
  3. Tap the notification or link that appears.
  4. Telegram opens with the group preview.
  5. Tap Join Group.

You can also scan QR codes from within Telegram itself. On mobile, go to Settings and tap the QR code icon next to your name. This opens Telegram's built-in scanner.

5. Being Added by an Existing Member

In some groups, any member can add you directly — no link needed. This is common in smaller, informal groups like family chats or friend groups.

How it works:

  1. Someone who's already in the group opens the group info.
  2. They tap Add Members.
  3. They search for your Telegram username or select you from their contacts.
  4. You're added instantly.

Privacy note: If you'd rather not be added to groups without your permission, you can control this in Telegram's privacy settings. Go to Settings > Privacy and Security > Groups & Channels and choose who can add you — everybody, your contacts only, or nobody. Setting it to "My Contacts" prevents random strangers from dropping you into groups you never asked to join.

6. Join via Username

Every public Telegram group has a unique username (like @groupname). If someone tells you a group's username — in a conversation, an article, or a forum post — you can search for it directly.

How to join:

  1. Open Telegram.
  2. Tap the search bar.
  3. Type the exact username, including the @ symbol (e.g., @PythonChat).
  4. The group appears in search results.
  5. Tap it, then tap Join Group.

This method works even when you don't have a clickable link. Someone can just say "join @PythonChat on Telegram" and you know exactly what to type.

What to Do After Joining a Group

Getting into a group is step one. What you do in the first few minutes determines whether you'll actually get value from it.

Read the Pinned Messages and Rules

Almost every well-run group has pinned messages at the top. These usually contain rules, guidelines, FAQs, and links to important resources. Tap the pin icon at the top of the chat to see them.

Ignoring the rules is the fastest way to get muted or banned. Most groups have zero tolerance for spam, off-topic messages, or self-promotion. Take 30 seconds to read them.

Introduce Yourself (If Appropriate)

Some groups have a culture of introductions. Others don't. Read the room. If you see other people introducing themselves, do the same — keep it brief and relevant. "Hi, I'm Sarah, I run a Telegram group for digital marketers in London" is useful. A five-paragraph autobiography is not.

Well-managed groups often use tools like automatic welcome messages to guide new members. If the group has a welcome bot, follow whatever instructions it provides.

Lurk Before You Post

This is underrated advice. Spend a few minutes reading the conversation before jumping in. Get a feel for the tone, the topics, and the unwritten norms. Every group has its own personality. A message that's perfectly fine in a casual meme group might get you banned in a professional discussion forum.

Lurking for even five minutes saves you from the embarrassment of asking a question that's answered in the pinned messages, or posting something that's off-topic for that particular community.

Turn On or Off Notifications

Telegram groups can be noisy. If a group sends hundreds of messages per day, your phone will be buzzing non-stop unless you manage notifications.

  • Mute the group if you want to check it on your own schedule: tap the group name, then Mute > Custom to pick a duration.
  • Enable notifications for mentions only if you want to be alerted when someone tags you directly.
  • Pin the group to the top of your chat list if it's important and you don't want to lose it in the scroll.

How to Find Groups Worth Joining

The hardest part of joining a Telegram group isn't the joining itself — it's finding a group that's actually worth your time. There are millions of Telegram groups, and most of them are either dead, full of spam, or just not relevant to you.

A few quick tips:

  • Check member count vs. activity. A group with 10,000 members and 5 messages a day is a ghost town. Look for groups where people are actually talking.
  • Read recent messages before joining. Telegram lets you preview public group chats before you commit. Scroll through and see if the conversation quality matches what you're looking for.
  • Ask for recommendations. The best groups are often found through word of mouth — ask in communities you're already part of.
  • Use dedicated search tools. Telegram's built-in search has serious limitations. Third-party directories and bots do a much better job of surfacing relevant communities.

Groups that invest in gamification and active moderation tend to have higher engagement and better conversations. Look for signs of active management — pinned messages, welcome bots, clear rules, and responsive admins.

How to Leave a Telegram Group

Sometimes a group isn't what you expected. Leaving is simple and nobody gets notified (in most groups).

On mobile:

  1. Open the group chat.
  2. Tap the group name at the top.
  3. Scroll down and tap Leave Group.
  4. Confirm.

On desktop:

  1. Right-click the group in your chat list.
  2. Select Leave Group.
  3. Confirm.

After leaving, the group disappears from your chat list. You won't receive any more messages from it. If it's a public group, you can rejoin anytime. If it's private, you'll need a new invite link.

You can also delete the chat when leaving if you want to remove the conversation history from your device. This only affects your local copy — other members' chat history remains unchanged.

A Note for Group Admins

If you run a Telegram group, every new member who joins is an opportunity — and a risk. A great first impression turns a curious newcomer into an active participant. No welcome, no guidance, and no rules turn them into a lurker who leaves within a week.

The best groups automate the onboarding process. Set up welcome messages that explain what the group is about, where to find the rules, and how to get started. Use pinned messages strategically. Make it easy for people to understand the value of sticking around.

Metricgram helps group admins welcome new members automatically, track engagement, and build communities that people actually want to stay in. If you're managing a Telegram group and want to stop losing new members to confusion and silence, give it a try.
